The Grand Tope in San Jose

Dec.26th,2006

We just came back from an amazing parade about three km long down the main
street of San Jose. There had to be at least three thousand horses in it.
Every December 26th they have this huge horse parade. The first part was fairly
organized with girls riding in colourful, long dresses and men and women on
horses doing fancy steps (the horses not the people). The rest of the parade
was every cowboy/girl and kid who owns a horse in Costa Rica and there certainly
are a lot. We´ve been riding twice and we did notice a lot of horses in the
countryside and towns but obviously the cowboy is alive and well here in Costa
Rica. You could certainly see the romantic cowboy image in a lot of the young
horsemen who stopped to chat with the girls at the side of the road. It´s
actually a huge social as a lot of the riders drink beer while they ride (try
that in Canada!) and half the road is blocked by riders who are socializing with
friends along the way.

Hasta lluego!

Hi Jon and Sue,
We're so glad to hear you are having a wonderful time in Costa Rica. We'll have to get back there someday to enjoy it more fully.
We had a good Christmas with the family, and last evening we had a lovely dinner at the Moon River Lookout with the Hemmings. Your names came up in conversation and we were all thinking of you.
Keep those photos coming. They look great!

We wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
